Infecții cronice
Numeroase studii subliniază importanța terapiei hiperbare în tratamentul infecțiilor cronice și mai ales a infecțiilor cu răspuns limitat la tratamentele clasice. Unele dintre cele mai des întâlnite infecții cronice care pot fi tratate cu ajutorul terapiei hiperbarice sunt: osteomielita, osteită, osteodiscită, infecții ale țesuturilor moi (răni deschise sau arsuri), infecții ale urechii interne, infecții pulmonare, infecții cutanate (abcese sau ulcere), borelioza.
Oxigenoterapia hiperbară poate contribui la vindecarea infecțiilor prin efecte bacteriostatice sau bactericide directe, îmbunătățirea efectelor antimicrobiene ale sistemului imunitar și efecte aditive sau sinergice cu anumiți agenți antimicrobieni.
