Acest sindrom presupune atât disfuncționalități ale activității cerebrale, cât și alterări ale integrității microstructurale neurale. Studii recente demonstrează efectele pozitive și eficiența terapiei hiperbarice în tratarea persoanelor suferinde de sindrom posttraumatic, mai ales a celor rezistenți la tratamentele clasice. Acest fapt se datorează activării neuroplasticității și se concretizează în ameliorare simptomatică.
